Domain owner and registrar

Every domain has two users: the owner and the registrar. In some cases they can be the same person, but usually the owner and registrar are two different entities. The basic difference is that the owner owns the domain, while the registrar manages it.

Domain names are a very specific product. To work properly (representing a website), they need to be set up correctly. Most people can’t create a domain, so the registrar handles the setup. The domain registrar is usually the company where the domain owner hosts their website.

By ordering a domain, you agree that the domain is managed by a registrar, to whom you pay a registration fee and annual fee to own the domain.
